Leave the lazy beach life behind for a day or two, to go exploring along the coast and into the highland hills of the hinterland, where you can experience genuine village hospitality during a real tropical adventure.

Route 1 – Navala and Ba

The distances involved are not great but because of road conditions, this route – with a stop for a swim and picnic, and a visit to Navala village – will require a whole day. Allow 15 minutes from Nadi to the Nausori Highlands road turn-off. The easiest way is to drive south (towards Suva) through town and turn left onto Nadi Back Road (there’s a Hindu temple on the opposite side of the road). Follow this road for 3 miles (5km), keeping your eyes peeled for the Nausori Highlands signpost on your right. Take this road and follow it 21 miles (34km), to the Bukuya turn-off.

The road leaves the Nadi flats and begins ascending over an undulating landscape sprinkled with sugarcane farms towards the highlands, before turning steeply uphill and following a narrow ridge with sharp bends. Massive volcanic rocks and sheer cliff faces overlooking Nadi town, the airport and offshore islands offer good photo opportunities.

The road leaves the plantations and continues up steep terrain, threading through rainforest. On your right is the beginning of the Sigatoka River catchment, while to the left runs Nadi River. A turn-off to the left marks the access road to Vaturu Dam, the source of fresh water for Nadi and Lautoka.

If you want a less adventurous trip, turn left to the dam and, after a picnic lunch, return to Nadi by descending via the Sabeto Valley to the main highway north of the airport. Otherwise, continue on towards Bukuya for another 7 miles (12km) and turn left before reaching the village. The road now follows the Ba River catchment towards the village of Navala, 10 miles (17km) from the junction. On the way there are plenty of picturesque spots to stop for a picnic.
